‘Text’ tanks and ‘Poof’ places

Hambletonian- and “Oaks”-eligibles were few and far between on the week before the eliminations for the two trotting classics. And the colt and filly eligibles being watched closely, Text Me and Poof She’s Gone, both lost.

On July 24 at Mohawk, on a stakes-filled evening’s program, two fields of soph trotters went to post in Canadian Breeders Championship (CBC) finals.

The colts went to post with a purse of $165,550. The big favorite was Hambo-hopeful Text Me. Having won his elim the week before and racing well the last month, Text Me made a big move to get to the front just after the half. He was relaxed on the lead but at three-quarters began to lose his advantage. Challenged in the stretch, Text Me was passed by one of the other two eligibles, Arriba Amigo. That one improved greatly from his recent efforts and held on for second to the fast-closing Hidden Message (a non-eligible).

The remaining hopeful, certainly lacking much more hope after this race, was Windsong Geant, who finished seventh.

Although three Oaks-eligible fillies trotted from the gate in the CBC filly final, worth $158,673, all eyes were on Poof She’s Gone. And yet, the talented filly was slightly the second choice over the filly that won.

Non-eligible Cross Of Lorraine was the public’s choice by a few coins and she lived up to her status by going wire to wire and keeping “Poof” from a victory that would have launched her into favorite status in next week’s elims.

Though she will still attract a lot of action, Poof will enter her Hambletonian Oaks elim with odds that can possibly make her appear very attractive again. Poof has a tendency to come back from a minor slump and win at a price. It can happen again.

The other two eligible fillies have a lot more to prove if they show up in the elims. In the CBC final, No Magic To It finished fifth and Wilsonator was seventh.
